CHAPTER 17 Covenant and Circumcision

1 [³was ¹And ²Abram ⁵years old ⁴ninety-nine], and the lord appeared to Abram, and he said to him, I am your God, you are well-pleasing before me -- then be blameless! 2 And I will establish my covenant between me and between you, and I will multiply you exceedingly. 3 And Abram fell upon his face. And [²spoke ³to him ¹God], saying, 4 And behold, my covenant is with you, and you will be father of a multitude of nations. 5 And [²will not ³be called ⁴any longer ¹your name], Abram; but [²will be ¹your name] Abraham, for [³father ⁴of many ⁵nations ¹I have appointed ²you]. 6 And I will increase you exceedingly exceedingly. And I will establish you for nations; and kings [²from ³you ¹will come forth]. 7 And I will establish my covenant between me and between you, and between your seed after you, unto their generations, for [²covenant ¹an eternal], to be your God, and with your seed after you. 8 And I will give to you and to your seed after you the land which you sojourn, all the land of Canaan for [²possession ¹an eternal]. And I myself will be to them for God. 9 And God said to Abraham, You also [²my covenant ¹shall observe], and your seed after you for their generations. 10 And this is the covenant which you shall observe between me and you, and between your seed after you. [⁴shall be circumcised ³to you ¹Every ²male]. 11 And you shall be circumcised of the flesh of your foreskin. And it will be for a sign of covenant between me and you. 12 And a male child eight days old shall be circumcised by you -- every male into your generations; the native-born servant of your house, and the one bought with silver, from every son of an alien who is not from your seed. 13 By circumcision he shall be circumcised -- the native-born servant of your house, and the one bought with silver. And [²will be ¹my covenant] upon your flesh for [²covenant ¹an eternal]. 14 And the uncircumcised male who shall not be circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin in the [²day ¹eighth], [²shall be utterly destroyed ¹that soul] from its race, for my covenant he effaced. 15 And God said to Abraham, Sarai your wife -- [²shall not ³be called ¹her name] Sarai, but, Sarah will be her name.

The Promise of a Son

16 And I will bless her, and give to you from her a child. And I will bless it, and it will be for nations; and kings of nations [²from ³him ¹will be]. 17 And Abraham fell upon his face and laughed. And he said in his mind, saying, Shall to the hundred year old be a son? And shall Sarah at ninety years bear? 18 [³said ¹And ²Abraham] to God, Ishmael, this one, let him live before you! 19 [³said ¹And ²God] to Abraham, Yes, behold, Sarah your wife will bear to you a son, and you shall call his name Isaac; and I will establish my covenant with him, for [²covenant ¹an eternal], and to his seed after him. 20 And concerning Ishmael, behold, I heeded you. And behold, I shall bless him, and I will increase him, and I will multiply him exceedingly. Twelve nations he will procreate, and I will make him for [²nation ¹a great]. 21 But my covenant I will establish with Isaac, whom [²shall bear ³to you ¹Sarah] at this time in [²year ¹another]. 22 And he completed speaking to him. And God ascended from Abraham. 23 And Abraham took Ishmael, his son, and all his native-born servants, and all the ones bought with silver, and every male of the men in the house of Abraham. And he circumcised their foreskins in [²time ³of the ⁴day ¹that], as [²spoke ³to him ¹God]. 24 And Abraham [²ninety-nine ¹was] years old when he circumcised the flesh of his foreskin. 25 And Ishmael his son was [²years old ¹thirteen] when he circumcised the flesh of his foreskin. 26 In [²time ³of the ⁴day ¹that] Abraham was circumcised, and Ishmael his son, 27 and all the males of his house, and the native-born servants, and the ones bought with silver from foreign nations.
